Police investigate homicide after man found dead on East Oakland street

A man was found dead on an East Oakland street early Wednesday, not far from where a business surveillance video shows a vehicle ramming a warehouse as part of a foiled break in.

Police are investigating the death in Oakland's Jingletown neighborhood as a homicide. The man’s name and age have not been released.

No arrests have been made.

About 2:45 a.m. officers responded to Chapman Street and 29th Avenue, where the warehouse is located, on a report of gunshots.

They arrived to find a man who had been shot. He was pronounced dead.

KTVU was shown surveillance video showing three vehicles circling the block. One of the them, an SUV then backs up and repeatedly rams the roll-up doors of a warehouse. While this is happening, a Mazda blocks traffic.

That Mazda was later found on Chapman Street. KTVU has learned that a key fob found near the dead man's body belongs to that Mazda.

Police say they do not know if the shooting and the attempted break-in are linked.

A police spokeswoman said investigators will be following up with witnesses and checking the area for video surveillance footage to learn more.
