Police search for suspect after officer-involved shooting in Sunnyvale

SUNNYVALE, Calif. (KTVU) -- Police in Sunnyvale are investigating a shooting involving an officer from another South Bay city and a suspected car burglar.

Police had the busy intersection at El Camino and Wolfe Road shut down for hours gathering evidence that may lead them to a white Mercedes sedan.

The roads are reopened but officers hope any witnesses in the area Monday night will come forward.

The chase started at around 6 p.m. in Santa Clara where two officers were investigating auto burglaries and they ended up finding a suspect.

Police followed the suspect vehicle, which was a white Mercedes sedan, into Sunnyvale.

When the sedan pulled over on El Camino near Wolfe Road, one officer got out of his unmarked vehicle and approached the Mercedes.

Police say that's when the Mercedes sped toward the officer and the officer feared for his life and fired at the car multiple times. It sped away heading north on Wolfe Road.

The second officer in a patrol vehicle chased the Mercedes on Wolfe Road, but lost it.

The officers were not injured. It's unknown if anyone in the Mercedes was injured.

The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety is heading up the investigation. They are unsure how many people were in the Mercedes and are working on getting a license plate number.

Their detectives are also looking to see if any surveillance video exists of the shooting and the chase.

The officer involved in the shooting is on paid administrative leave.
