Police surround Long Beach retirement home after shots fired

Firefighters responding to an explosion at a high-rise Long Beach apartment building were met by gunfire, according to reports from the scene.

The Covenant House, which is in the area of Atlantic Avenue and Fourth Street, was surrounded by police early Monday.

"All I can confirm at this time is that there has been a shooting,'' Long Beach police Sgt. Brad Johnson told City News Service. "Not an active shooter situation. Investigation is ongoing.''

News video shows both police and firefighters surrounding the senior citizens apartment building. Reports from the scene indicate two paramedics may have been wounded after responding to an explosion at that location.
