The Marin County Sheriff said search and rescue crews on Thursday  found a 16-year-old girl who had been missing since the afternoon before.

"Safe and in good spirits," the sheriff tweeted just before 7:30 a.m. Details of her rescue were not immediately detailed. But her father appeared at the sheriff's substation to pick up his daughter, who appeared very quiet during their brief on-camera reunion.

She didn't answer many questions, other than to say she slept on the mountain overnight. Then, she and her father headed off in their car together.

Lt. Doug Pittman said Sarah Jane Tang, who attends Lowell High School in San Francisco, and a girlfriend took an Uber from San Francisco to the popular mountain in Marin County on Wednesday about noon and started to hike the Rock Springs Trail. The girls got separated at some point, he said, near the Mt. Tam watershed. She had a cell phone with her, but it likely died, Pittman said. Crews had been looking for her since midnight.

Crews were able to find her friend about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday because her friend's phone was working.
