SAN FRANCISCO (KTVU) - A K-9 with the San Francisco Police Department has died due to an illness.
According to the San Francisco Police Department, Cavik was an 8-year-old Belgian Malinois Shepherd.
He was born in the Netherlands in 2009 and joined the San Francisco Police Department in 2011.
Cavik was trained in patrol and explosive detection. Cavik, along with Officer Matt Maciel, patrolled the streets and helped with suspect searches, explosive sweeps for dignitary visits and large venues, and assisted in S.W.A.T operations. Cavik also performed canine demonstrations.
According to the San Francisco Police Department, "Cavik was always eager to go to work but also enjoyed time at home with Officer Maciel and his family. He will be sorely missed by both the Maciel family and SFPD family."
Cavik worked events including 2012 and 2014 World Series games for the San Francisco Giants, Super Bowl 50 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, and the 2012 U.S. Open golf tournament at the Olympic Club in San Francisco
