San Francisco's Union Square ice rink opens for the holidays

SAN FRANCISCO - A holiday ice rink is opening in San Francisco's Union Square with a ceremony this morning featuring, among others, the San Francisco Giants' mascot Lou Seal and a special performance from Disney's "The Lion King,"
organizers said.
Along with the 9:30 a.m. ceremony at Powell and Geary streets, visitors can also see a performance by the Yerba Buena Professional Skating Ensemble and hear a disc jockey play music during part of the day. Food and
drinks will also be available.
The rink, called the Safeway Holiday Ice Rink, will be open until 11:30 p.m. tonight and every night until Jan. 16, according to organizers. The rink opens every day at 10 a.m.
Tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for children 8 years old and younger. Figure skate and hockey skate rentals are $6 per pair. A portion of the ticket proceeds will go to the San Francisco Recreation & Park Department, organizers said.
