San Jose police are investigating a hit-and-run collision with a pedestrian that killed a man Tuesday morning.

The crash was reported at 7:04 a.m. near South White Road and Florence Avenue, located two blocks south of James Lick High School.

The victim, whose name has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"I was so scared to see him [lying in the road]," said Harjinder Singh, who lives around the corner from where the incident happened.

Investigators say a pickup truck was traveling north on South White Road when it struck a pedestrian who was on the street near the sidewalk. The driver fled the scene and remained at large as of early this evening, police said.

The truck is described as a full-sized white Ford pickup with tinted windows, black rims and a loud exhaust, according to police.  The vehicle may also have a damaged or missing front bumper.

Several neighbors heard the incident.  One said it sounded like a trash bin had been run over.

Roberto Cedano lives nearby.  He said he looked outside as soon as he heard a loud noise.

"I feel so bad because I [saw that] something happened because a white truck was driving so fast," said Cedano.

Police are making a plea for information from the community, saying someone out there knows who this driver is.

"The bottom line is this -- he ran over someone and fled then fled the scene," said Sgt. Enrique Garcia, spokesman for the San Jose Police Department.  "He should have done the right thing and call for help, and he didn't call for help."

Anyone with information about the case is urged to call the Police Department's traffic investigation unit at (408) 277 4654.
