SCPD introduces new K9 handler and dog

The Santa Clara Police Department is introducing its newest K9 handler and dog.

Brek is a 2 year old German Shepherd from the Czech Republic.

Brek was purchased thanks to a donation from the Sean M. Walsh Memorial Foundation.

Brek will train for the next 6 weeks to perform building searches, area searches and tracking skills for outstanding suspects wanted in connection with violent or weapons related crimes.

He will also be trained to detect explosives.

Once certified, Brek will join our three other existing K9 teams to bring the K9 Unit back up to full strength of four K9 teams.

Brek is partnered with Officer Jerry Ogg, a 4-year veteran with the Santa Clara Police Department.

Officer Ogg was recently promoted to the K9 unit following his return from military deployment in Djibouti.

The Sean M. Walsh K-9 Memorial Foundation is named in memory of Specialist Sean M. Walsh.

His family and friends founded the organization in December, 2011, shortly after they learned of his death while he was serving in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

Prior to joining the Army National Guard, Sean was a Police Explorer with the Santa Clara Police Department.
