Rescue crews with the San Francisco Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard have canceled a search this evening for a person seen in distress in the water off Ocean Beach.

At about 3:40 p.m., crews began searching for the victim, who was initially thought to be a surfer, on the beach's south side near the Great Highway and Sloat Boulevard, fire officials said.

Surfers at the scene, however, told rescue crews that the victim was fully clothed.

Further information was not immediately available.
