SF suspect in fatal shooting outside bar makes initial court appearance

One of two suspects charged in connection with the fatal shooting of an Alameda man outside a downtown San Francisco bar in July made an initial appearance in court today.

Oakland resident Tony Gonzalez, 25, appeared in San Francisco Superior Court this afternoon for arraignment on charges of murder, attempted murder and assault with a semiautomatic firearm, but postponed entering a plea until Friday.

Gonzalez was arrested Friday in connection with a July 17 shooting outside the Edinburgh Castle Pub at 950 Geary St. that killed 26-year-old Joshua Mejia and injured another man.

Police said the deadly shooting occurred after a fight broke out among patrons leaving the bar. The dispute had already subsided when a suspect allegedly pulled up in a car, got out and fired several shots, police said.

A second suspect, 23-year-old San Francisco resident Francisco Heredia, was already in custody on unrelated charges, according to police. He did not appear in court this afternoon because of a transportation problem but faces the same charges in the current case as Gonzalez.

Jail records indicate Heredia faces robbery, assault, drug and weapons charges in connection with other cases, while Gonzalez also has prior cases pending in court including drug and assault charges.
