SFO: Hundreds of flights delayed due to rain, clouds at airport

SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (BCN) Hundreds of flights are delayed and 17 have been canceled as rain enveloped the San Francisco International Airport Friday evening.

Airport Duty Manager Russell Mackey said the airport is on a ground delay program through 11 p.m.

"That's always flexible though," he said.

Mackey said 280 flights have been delayed and the average delay is about an hour, though some are as short as a few minutes and others as long as two hours.

The airlines most affected are Alaska Airlines and SkyWest Airlines. SkyWest Airlines uses mostly smaller planes to fly to regional destinations, Mackey said.

Rain is expected to continue Friday night and into Saturday morning before it dries out ahead of a storm on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.
