SFPD expects 4 Excelsior shooting suspects to be in custody within days
SAN FRANCISCO (KTVU) - San Francisco police say they are close to zeroing in on all four suspects in the shooting that rocked a high school in the Excelsior District.
Sources tell KTVU that the shooting was gang-related and that a 15-year-old boy who had recently transferred to the school was the intended target.
KTVU's Tara Moriarty spoke exclusively with one of the victim's family members who was critically wounded Tuesday afternoon as students were leaving school for the day.
On Wednesday morning students scrawled messages of support in chalk on the pavement for the four students shot in the parking lot of June Jordan High School at 3:15 p.m.
The students had just attended an assembly on gun violence, according to the female victim, whose relatives, Brittany and Renee spoke to KTVU anonymously.
They say the girl was not the shooters' target.
"She was totally innocent ," said Renee, who said her relative didn't realize at first that she'd been shot.
Witnesses say shots rang out and the female victim was pushed to the ground in a stampede.
Brittany visited her wounded relative in the hospital yesterday after receiving word of the shooting, "Something that she kept saying... was, 'Why did this happen to me?'" said Brittany. "She said I'm not involved in anything, I go to school, I come to learn, I keep to myself."
The girl was shot in the hip and is expected to recover fully. Her family describes her as an honor roll student and bookworm.
Three 15-year-old boys were also shot, one of whom sources tell KTVU was the intended target. That male student had recently transferred to June Jordan from Lincoln High School.
Police confirmed that the shooting was gang-related.
This morning, some parents expressed concerns over school safety on campus.
"I think these are questions that all students and staff ask each other during times like this, " said June Jordan
Principal Jessica Huang. "We did the best that we could and provided a safe space immediately."
Police are looking for four shooters described as teens in dark clothing.
Officials say none of the suspects attend June Jordan.
"I[The shooting] is shocking because you send your child to get an education and you send them in what you think is a safe environment," said Renee. "As far as the gang activity, nothing is so bad that it can't be settled without someone being killed... because that's final. I just wonder what kind of fail-safe methods could the school have had to avoid anything like this?"
Security has been beefed up near the campus.
School counselors were available to students.
Meanwhile, police tell KTVU that they expect all four suspects to be in custody within the next few days.
While the female gunshot victim is not sure if she'll come back to the school, her family says they will be celebrating her 16th birthday next month and for that, they are grateful.
