Southwest to launch Oakland-to-Mexico service

OAKLAND (KTVU) -- Southwest Airlines held a "Viva Mexico" event Thursday in Jack London Square to promote its new routes from Oakland to Mexico.

The low-fare carrier, which is based in Dallas, is set to begin offering non-stop service with daily flights from Oakland International Airport to San Jose del Cabo, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta. The new flights are scheduled to start in February, 2017 once the Mexican government has signed off on the routes.

Southwest has also been granted approval to operate two daily flights from the U.S. to Havana, Cuba.
