Step aside Hello Kitty: 'Aggretsuko' pop-up shop invades San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO (KTVU) - Step aside, Hello Kitty. Sanrio has a new character to add to the collection with her own pop-up shop that has invaded San Francisco.
The Japanese company responsible for bringing us the cute kitty in 1974, has introduced the non-traditional 'Aggretsuko.' She has a boring day job, but lets loose at night by singing death metal at karaoke bars.
Aggretsuko, is a combination of the word aggressive and the name of the red panda, "Retsuko."
The character is supposed to be in her 20s, stuck in an office job with a boss she hates. I'm sure many of us can relate.
"When she's a sweet little red panda, she's almost like a traditional Sanrio character our fans are used to. But the difference is when she gets a little stressed and goes into a rage, she turns into a raging thrash metal dynamo," said Dave Marchi, Sanrio's vice president of marketing.
The pop-up includes a replica of Aggretsuko's life. People can take pictures at her office space and at the karaoke bar where she sings.
The store stays open for the next two weeks and is located on 3rd and King streets, across from AT&T Park if you want to join the fun.
