Strong, cold winds felt across Bay Area

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for the San Francisco Bay Area in effect through tonight.

Strong and gusty southwesterly winds developed this morning ahead of a cold front, according to the National Weather Service.

Winds switched to a northwesterly direction in the afternoon.

Winds are expected to be the strongest near the coast and in the hills.

Sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected throughout the day, and wind gusts could reach 40 to 50 mph.

Drought-stressed trees may topple, and falling trees and tree limbs may take down power lines and lead to power outages.

Driving, especially vehicles that have a high profile, could be more difficult in high winds.

A Wind Advisory is issued when wind gusts of at least 45 mph are expected.
