Suspect arrested after breaking into, assaulting woman at Oakland home

A suspect was in custody Friday after police say he broke into a woman's home and attempted to sexually assault her.

The incident occurred at a home in the 6500 block of Fenham Street shortly after 4:15 a.m., police said. The woman, whose identity was not released, was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Police said she was listed in stable condition.

Authorities said the victim did not know the suspect. Police were called to the residence on a report of a home invasion. When officers arrived, the suspect tried to avoid capture by breaking a plate glass window but he was arrested at the scene.

The woman started screaming when she saw the suspect in her home. Neighbors heard the screams and called 911, police said.

The man assaulted the woman but responding officers prevented him from sexually assaulting the victim. The identity of the suspect was not immediately released. Charges for the man were pending.
