Suspect arrested in fatal Marin County detox center triple shooting
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - A man has been arrested after one person was killed and two others injured during a Monday morning shooting at the Helen Vine Detox Center in unincorporated Marin County, the sheriff said.
The Marin County Sheriff identified the suspect as Davance Lamar Reed, 37, a transient between Marin City and Vallejo. Reed was being held in the Sonoma County Jail for an early morning pursuit not related to the shooting. Detectives say Reed made admissions connecting him to the crime scene.
The surviving victims of the shooting were identified as Anthony Dominguez, 32, an employee of the facility, and Brittney Kehaulani McCann, 30, who has a dating relationship with the suspect. Both victims are being treated in the intensive care unit at Marin General Hospital.
The Marin Sheriff Department did not release the identity of the deceased victim pending notification of family members.
The shooting was first reported around 1:33 a.m. at the center located at 301 Smith Ranch Road just north of the San Rafael city limit, according to Marin County Sheriff Sgt. Michael Brovelli. Deputies arrived to find three people - two men and a woman - suffering from gunshot wounds. Later in the morning, the sheriff identified the victims as staff members. The injured employees were taken to Marin General Hospital.
The suspect was at large following the shooting, before being located and arrested.
The Helen Vine Recovery Center is a licensed 26-bed co-ed residential detoxification program that provides recovery-oriented services to people with alcohol and drug addiction issues, as well as co-occurring psychiatric problems, according to its website.
While the San Rafael area isn’t immune to crime, homicides are infrequent. Over the summer, San Rafael had its first homicide since 2011. In that case, San Rafael police responded to a murder-suicide on Penny Royal Lane in Terra Linda on July 24. The married couple were senior citizens.
Additional details on the arrest have not been released.
