Suspect dies following Saratoga officer-involved shooting
SANTA CLARA COUNTY, Calif. (KTVU) - SARATOGA (BCN) - A man shot by a Santa Clara County sheriff's deputy in Saratoga on Monday night has died, a sheriff's spokesman said today.
Deputies responded at 7:49 p.m. to a request for a welfare check at a home on Titus Avenue off of Prospect Road, sheriff's spokesman Lt. James Jensen said.
After trying for 50 minutes to contact whoever was inside the house, deputies went around and entered via a back door. Once inside, they encountered a man with a firearm in his hand, Jensen said.
Several deputies told the man to drop the gun, but instead he allegedly rose it and a deputy, described by Jensen as a veteran of the sheriff's office, shot him.
The man was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead, Jensen said.
The home where the shooting occurred is across the street from Christa McAuliffe School. Jensen said the school remains open for classes today.
