Suspect in standoff with police found dead from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound

OAKLAND (BCN) - Police in Oakland have confirmed a Thursday standoff at an East Oakland motel with a suspect wanted in connection with several area homicides has ended Friday morning with the suspect being found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Oakland Police Department has not officially identified the suspect who was found deceased, according to police spokeswoman Johnna Watson.

Officers responded Thursday at 3:05 p.m. to a motel in the 8400 block of Edes Avenue on a report a suspect wanted in connection with several murders from surrounding areas was seen in one of the motel rooms.

Patrol units and the Oakland Police Department Tactical Operations Team responded to the scene.

As the tactical team was preparing to contact the suspect, officers heard multiple gunshots from inside the motel room.

The suspect was found unresponsive this morning, suffering from what was likely a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Watson said.

The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency personnel.

No police officers discharged their firearms during the incident, according to Watson.
