Teen charged in murder of Oakland city councilwoman's grandson

A 15-year-old was arrested and charged with the murder of 17-year-old Torian Hughes of Oakland.

The name and photo of the juvenile are being withheld due to his age.

Torian’s grandmother is Oakland City Council President Lynette Gibson McElhaney.

Torian was gunned down Dec. 20 near 9th Street and Mandela Parkway, not far from the West Oakland BART Station.

Oakland police say Hughes was with a friend, when two people approached them and started shooting.

No motive was given and the two suspects took off on foot.

Hughes’ friend was not injured in the shooting.

Gibson McElhaney wrote on Facebook about her family’s loss and lamented the senseless violence saying her grandson’s death “and the shootings throughout Oakland that followed over the past two days, only strengthen my resolve for eradicating gun violence in our city. None of us, not one of us is immune.”

A GoFundMe page set up for Hughes’ family describes the teen as eccentric, creative and witty.

The 15-year-old was charged at an Alameda County court.
