Toddler who fell from Oakland fire escape has died: coroner

An 18-month-old boy who fell from a fire escape at a downtown apartment building on Friday where his family lives has died, the coroner said.

The Alameda County Coroner’s Office confirmed Monday that David Rivera-Vargas died Saturday afternoon at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland where he was taken after falling.

The boy fell Friday afternoon an a building in the 1400 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

The East Bay Times reported the boy’s family lives on the third floor of the four-story building.  Authorities said he left their apartment and made it to the second floor fire escape that he climbed onto before falling to the sidewalk below. At this point, police said the death appears to be a tragic accident.
