Truck crash spills 40 gallons of fuel on I-80 in Berkeley

Update: All lanes were cleared by 3 p.m.

A big rig for Safeway crashed early Sunday morning, and caused two lanes to be blocked on eastbound Interstate Highway 80, just west of University Avenue in Berkeley.

The incident happened just after 5 a.m..

A CHP officer tells KTVU reporter Allie Rasmus, that it could be close to noon, before the road is clear.

A Sig-alert was issued at 5:49 a.m., because of the two blocked lanes.

Authorities said the Safeway delivery vehicle crashed into some barrels and the median.

The driver told officers, he did not know what happened.

But the crash punctured the gas tank, and spilled about 40 gallons of fuel, said CHP officials.

Cleanup crews were able to contain the fuel spill, and it did not affect the nearby marine life at the Berkeley Marina.

There was also 36,000 pounds of food inside the vehicle.

The driver was not injured in the incident.
