Two people found dead following fiery crash

Napa, Calif. (KTVU/BCN Wires)- Two people died in a fiery crash after their car veered off the roadway Friday evening in Napa County, California Highway Patrol officers said today.

Officers responded to a report of a solo vehicle crash in the area of Butts Canyon Road, a little more than a mile north of James Creek Road, just after 10 p.m. on Friday. CHP officers said the driver of a 2005 Saab, which was headed south on Butts Canyon Road, apparently lost control of the vehicle.

The car turned in a counter-clockwise direction and crossed the northbound lane before veering off the roadway. It then crashed into some rocks but continued down an embankment for approximately 50 feet where the engine ignited and the car became engulfed in flames.

CHP officers said two people inside the car were pronounced deceased at the scene. It's unclear whether the occupants were wearing their seatbelts or whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

The decedent's identities were not available this morning.
