San Jose police said undercover officers returned fire at an unknown number of suspects –  who they said shot at them first -- and then fled the scene.

Police said on social media that the shooting was reported on Monday at about 10:40 p.m. near Melbourne Boulevard and McLaughlin Avenue.

Police said that plainclothes officers were working an unrelated event when they were shot at by unknown suspects and returned fire.

The suspects fled the scene and no injuries have been reported, police said.

Police did not immediately provide more details, but they said they would later.

As of Tuesday morning, several street closures were in place: McLaughlin Avenue was closed from Highway 280 to Appian Lane and Melbourne Boulevard was closed from Macredes Avenue to McLaughlin Avenue.
