Vietnam War vet gunned down on San Jose street
SAN JOSE, Calif. (KTVU and wires) -- A man who was shot and killed as he returned to his San Jose home last week was identified Wednesday as a 61-year-old Vietnam War veteran, according to police.
Danh Nguyen was found lying near the entrance to the Woodbridge Mobile Home Park at 3051 Towers Lane when police responded to reports of gunshots at 5:38 p.m. Friday, police said. He was pronounced dead there.
Investigators believe Nguyen was walking on Lexann Avenue heading to his home in the park when one or more suspects approached him and opened fire.
Witnesses saw a gray compact vehicle with multiple occupants driving away from the scene, police said. As of this afternoon, police have not located the car or the suspects.
Nguyen served in the Republic of Vietnam Airborne Division Angels in Red Hats, an elite section of the South Vietnam army until the country fell in 1975, according to police.
Anyone with information about the shooting has been asked to contact Detective Sgt. Guire or Detective Tran of the San Jose Police Department's homicide unit at (408) 277-5283.
