Women now invited to Titans of Mavericks surf competition

Big-wave surf competition, Titans of Mavericks, announced on social media it will include an all-women’s heat in Half Moon Bay this upcoming season.

The decision was made after the California Coastal Commission told organizers of the event, Cartel Management, Inc., that they are required to include more women in the 2017-2018 season.

According to SURFER, while the roster in unknown, six female surfers are now invited to their very own one-hour heat. In the competition they can battle some of the biggest and most treacherous surfing conditions and compete each other for a portion of a $30,000 prize.

The addition of the first ever women’s heat has been a very pleasant surprise for many fans and surfers, but especially for the Committee for Equity in Women’s Surfing. Founded by pro surfers, the committee has been fighting for a women’s heat.  While excited for this new chapter in Titan surfing, they will continue to push even more for more women’s rights, according to SURFER.

“I think it’s awesome,” member of the Committee for Equity in Women’s Surfing, Bianca Valenti told SURFER. “I’m just excited to see the women’s side of the sport strengthen. It felt weird always asking for them to let us women in. So it feels great knowing they know want us to be apart of this rad big wave community.”

Titans of Mavericks organizers will pay close attention to weather conditions in order to determine the best day for the competition.

The event window starts in the beginning of November and runs through March 31, 2017.

The opening ceremony will be held this Friday in Half Moon Bay from 12-2 p.m.
