Worker in Fremont hurt after truck crashes into restaurant

FREMONT (KTVU) -- A worker was hurt after a truck crashed into a busy Fremont restaurant Friday morning, authorities said.

The incident occurred at a Denny's, located in the 5200 block of Mowry Avenue near Farwell Drive, shortly before 11 a.m. Authorities said a female passenger in the truck suffered from bumps and bruises but was not seriously hurt. The condition of the worker was not immediately released but her injuries were not believed to be serious.

Witnesses told police the driver of the white pick-up truck was leaving the restaurant's parking lot and attempting to merge into traffic on Mowry when the accident occurred.

Authorities said the man apparently shifted into reverse and mistakenly hit the gas pedal instead of the brake before crashing into the eatery.

"This vehicle went out onto Mowry and came right back in and slammed into the building," said Fremont firefighter Rich Dickinson.

The restaurant closed while inspectors worked to determine if the building was structurally sound. It was not clear if the driver would be charged in the incident.
