Wrong-way minivan driver in Milpitas dies after causing multi-car crash: CHP

A wrong-way minivan driver died Tuesday morning after causing a multicar crash in Milpitas, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP said the driver was a 52-year-old man from Oakland, but his name was not immediately released.

The driver was traveling north in the southbound lanes of Interstate Highway 880 at state Highway 237 just before 5 a.m., according to CHP Officer Janean Reynolds. Why he was driving in the wrong direction is unclear.

The driver of that van ended up causing a collision involving four other vehicles, CHP officials said. he was taken to the hospital with major injuries, but was pronounced dead before 7 a.m., Reynolds said.

The injuries of the other drivers were not major, the CHP said.

Three southbound lanes were blocked during the investigation and motorists were advised to get off at 237 and find an alternative route.
