More than 550,000 Kobalt yard power tools sold at Lowe's have been recalled after reports that their lithium-ion batteries can smoke, spark or catch fire while charging through a USB-C port.
Dig deeper:
The recall, announced Thursday by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), affects about 554,780 Kobalt 24V and 48V yard power tools that use certain Kobalt-branded USB-C rechargeable batteries.
According to the CPSC, charging the lithium-ion batteries through the USB-C port while the batteries remain inserted in the yard power tools can cause the batteries to short-circuit, creating a fire hazard that could result in serious injury.

The recall includes a wide range of Kobalt products, including string trimmers, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, chainsaws, pruning saws, power cleaners and bristle brush kits.
The affected batteries feature a USB-C charging port and were sold in 3.0Ah, 4.0Ah, 5.0Ah, 6.0Ah and 8.0Ah capacities. Only products equipped with the USB-C batteries are included in the recall.
What you can do:
Greenworks Tools, which imported the products, said consumers should immediately stop charging the recalled batteries through the USB-C port while they are inserted in the tools.
Customers should contact Greenworks Tools to receive a free replacement battery that does not include a USB-C charging port. The company will also provide a charger adapter, an updated product manual, a warning label to place on the tool and a prepaid shipping label with instructions for returning the recalled battery.
