SAN FRANCISCO (KTVU) -- Even the most dedicated 49er fans will have to do some studying to get familiar with this year's depth chart.
The chart for the wide receivers is Exhibit A. That's because Anquan Boldin's decision to play in Detroit leaves Torrey Smith and Jerome Simpson as the most experienced receivers in camp and that changes a player's responsibilities.
Smith will be playing in a new role in 2016.
It will also signify the time for some of the younger 49er receivers to establish their NFL credentials.
Bruce Ellington is now in his third season and Quentin Patton is in his fourth. Both need to be healthy and solid contributors to the offense.
