Warriors cancel agreement with ex-SFPD chief Greg Suhr

Greg Suhr

SAN FRANCISCO (KTVU) -- The same day it was announced, the Golden State Warriors sent a news release announcing that the team has decided to discontinue its arrangement with former San Francisco police chief Greg Suhr. The plan was to bring Suhr on as a consultant for the Warriors, the team said Thursday.

The updated release states the agreement to end the relationship was mutual and effective immediately.

"The Warriors had recently put Suhr on retainer to advise the organization regarding certain security matters related to the team’s ground breaking ceremony occurring in San Francisco next Tuesday.

“The last thing I want to do is cause a distraction for the Warriors during this incredibly positive time for the team and organization,” Suhr said in the statement.  “I think this is in the best interest of everyone."

The embattled former chief was touted by the Warriors as an expert on public safety and security issues, event planning and operations, as well as VIP protection, and risk assessment.

Suhr, 58, was a 30-year police veteran and was the top cop before leaving the department in May after a police sergeant shot and killed an unarmed black woman in Bayview. The shooting came amid a spate of officer-involved shootings around the U.S. and raised questions about the department's use of force policy.'

In December, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee named William "Bill" Scott, a deputy police chief for Los Angeles to replace Suhr.
