Stubborn fire in Oakland at recycling yard started from large debris pile

Oakland's interim fire chief describes the fire at Schnitzer Steel, a recycling yard along the embarcadero as "fast-moving" and stubborn. He says the fire started in a huge debris pile of metal scraps. At times, huge plumes of smoke could be seen for miles. People say the smell of smoke was strong and in some cases, it irritated their throats. But fire officials say the EPA is monitoring air quality and says it is normal.
