Fifteen Years Later: The Life & Legacy of Oscar Grant
This Tuesday, the City of Oakland will honor Oscar Grant on what should have been his 38th birthday--a milestone he never had the chance to reach. He was just 22 years of age and full of promise when his life came to an abrupt end by a police officer's bullet on New Year's Day, 2009. It's now been 15 years since his death shook the Bay Area and became a watershed moment in Bay Area Black History. Some see his death as a flashpoint of the movement that we see today fighting for Black lives. We spoke with Grant's family, still carrying the weight of their loss, and with BART police, to confront the question: what, if anything, has truly changed since that fateful day?
