Voting age for Oakland, Berkeley school boards lowered to 16
For the first time ever in California, teenagers as young as 16 will be able to cast their votes in school board elections this November in the cities of Oakland and Berkeley. The historic move comes after voters approved two ballot measures in 2016 and 2020 that permits teen participation in local school board races. We spoke with Lukas Brekke-Miesner, Executive Director of Oakland Kids First, and Edamevoh Ajayi, a student organizer and Oakland Youth Commissioner, about this significant achievement.
