A mother’s mission: Turning tragedy into fentanyl awareness

The conversation about fentanyl’s dangers continues with a powerful, personal story of its devastating impact. As this deadly drug infiltrates communities, it’s crucial for parents to recognize the risks—and know how to talk to their kids before it’s too late. Kelly Perkins, a teacher with the Mount Diablo Unified School District, joined us on 'The Nine' to share the heartbreaking loss of her son, Carson, who died from a fentanyl overdose in 2022. Now, she’s turning her grief into action, fighting for awareness and prevention to save other families from the same tragedy. Perkins has a nonprofit called, Carson's Wings of Hope, which has education and financial resources for young adults going through trauma of substance abuse and mental health concerns.
