102-year-old woman crosses ‘getting arrested' off her bucket list

A 102-year-old Missouri woman wasn't causing any trouble, but she still ended up in the back-seat of a Saint Louis Police Department cruiser.

Edie Simms's "brush with the law" was part of a plan to fulfill a back-seat bucket list wish.

For the past two years Edie has been stitching together hundreds of homemade items like scarves, pot holders, and eye glass cases for those at the Five Star Senior Center, an organization that serves seniors in south St. Louis.

Edie has never had a chance to deliver these items personally. So last Friday, Five Star's executive director worked with the St. Louis Police Department to provide Edie with a police escort so she could make a delivery to the center.

In all of her 102 years, she had never set foot in a police car, until this moment.

And Edie wanted to go all out. So in dramatic style, she asked to be placed in handcuffs and in the back of the police car.

The police escort arrived at the Five Star Senior Center, with sirens blaring.

The center's executive director Michael Howard had nothing but praise for Edie and her work to help others. "Here we've got a senior helping seniors... I just think that's the neatest thing," Howard said.

Edie had some advice on how to live a fulfilling life at 102: "Keep going, don't ever stop whatever it is you're doing," she said. "And spend some time doing community service because sometimes the people that you reach out and touch is the only person that they will talk to in a day."
