Bay Area suburbs see big rent increases
The San Francisco Bay Area has seen steep increases in rent prices in the past year, but the hikes have been more noticeable in suburban areas.
SAN FRANCISCO - Rent prices in the Bay Area have seen a steep increase in the past year, but the hikes have been all the more dramatic in the suburbs.
According to a rent report from Zumper, Campbell saw the highest rent increases, with average rates towering at 32% above the 2024 average.
Other Silicon Valley suburbs also felt the sting. In Menlo Park, the average rent went up by 24%. And in Sunnyvale, average rent prices increased by 23%.
In the East Bay, Walnut Creek saw an increase of 14% in average rent prices when compared to last year.
Silicon Valley also saw some of the most expensive one-bedroom apartments available for rent.
Average prices for a one-bedroom apartment in Sunnyvale hovered around $3,260, while the average price in Mountain View was $3,230.
Accommodations in Menlo Park and San Francisco were listed as being slightly more affordable, with the average rent of a one-bedroom apartment being $3,170 and $3,160 respectively.
On the other hand, Vallejo, Antioch and Richmond were identified as the most affordable communities for Bay Area renters.
In Richmond, a renter can expect a one-bedroom apartment to cost about $1,800 a month. In Vallejo and Antioch, the average monthly rent for a one-bedroom is about $1,580.
The median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in California is about $2,100.
