Car plunges off Santa Cruz wharf, killing one

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - (BCN) - At least one person has died after firefighters rescued two people Saturday night when the vehicle they were in went into the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf.

At 8:24 p.m., fire crews responded to a report of a submerged vehicle at the wharf, which is located at 21 Municipal Wharf, according to fire officials.

Santa Cruz police and members of the U.S. Coast Guard assisted with the incident, fire officials said.

Upon arrival, rescue crews found the vehicle submerged in up to 30 feet of water on the wharf's west side.

After several dive attempts, crews were able to extricate one of the vehicle's occupants, a male passenger. That victim was taken to a hospital, according to fire officials.
Another search lead to the second victim. Rescue crews extricated the second victim from the vehicle and transported him to a Coast Guard Vessel, where medical personal conducted life saving measures before transporting him to the hospital, fire officials said.

Santa Cruz police are continuing to investigate the incident, according to fire officials.
