Car submerged in Oakland Estuary

ALAMEDA, Calif. (KTVU) -- Alameda, Calif. (KTVU) -- One person was killed, after a car went into the Oakland Estuary Saturday morning, said authorities.

Alameda emergency dispatch received a report at 7:01 a.m., about a vehicle in the water.

Authorities said the SUV was going at a high rate of speed through the Nob Hill Foods parking lot, near the estuary, when the vehicle went over a sidewalk, through a fence, and ended up submerged in the water.

A grocery store cashier jumped in to try to save the person, but could not locate the individual.

An Alameda Fire Department rescuer eventually pulled one man out of the water.

He was rushed to Highland Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

There were initial reports that as many as two other people were in the SUV, and might have still been in the water.

Crews on scene who helped in the rescue attempt, included Alameda Police and Fire Departments, the San Francisco Fire Department, Southern Marin Fire Protection District, the Alameda Couty Sheriff's Office, and the U.S. Coast Guard.
