Chilling robbery of Oakland couple caught on video
(KTVU) Oakland -
An elderly couple in Oakland's Fruitvale District were attacked right outside their home, and it was all caught on video.
"Mad. I was mad as hell," says Alberto Huizar.
Huizar is upset by what happened right in front of the home he's shared with his wife for more than 40 years.
The video is chilling.
It shows two men in red confronting Huizar and his wife in broad daylight on Aug. 7 as they were heading out to celebrate his 78th birthday that day.
One man demands Huizar's wallet and then pistol-whips him.
"With a gun, with a gun. He hit me like that," Huizar said, motioning toward his head.
The man then punches Huizar. The second robber grabs his wife and rips off her bracelets, watch and gold chain.
In the middle of all this, a truck passes by, and the robbers seem to pause. Huizar thinks the driver likely saw the guns and left, without calling police.
The gunmen jumped into a car and took off. No arrests have been made.
Oakland City Councilmember Noel Gallo lives nearby. He says several residents have been robbed on the same street in recent months.
"This house right here. The gentleman that owns the house got robbed. Right across the street, this gentleman that owns this house got robbed."
"Grandma and grandpa can't even go walk down the street to catch the bus like we used to, without having their purses stolen, and now they're at the point where they're being directly assaulted," Gallo said.
"The police come by once in a while, but not very often," Huizar said.
About six months ago, Joseph Samaniego was robbed at gunpoint by three men while going to the post office around the corner.
"You see the gun, and it's very scary..to confront something like that, aand you don't know whether you're going to get shot."
Oakland police said they have the surveillance video and "have distributed information pertaining to this investigation to officers in the field."
