CHP searching for suspect following pursuit in the East Bay

Authorities in the East Bay are looking for a suspect they have been following since about 4 p.m. on Friday. The suspect Lexus car drove erratically through multiple East Bay counties before one passenger bailed and was detained. Meanwhile, another person in the vehicle vacated the car and entered an apartment complex.

The California Highway Patrol is searching for a suspect after they had been following a gold Lexus with two people inside in the East Bay since around 4 p.m. on Friday, officials say.

What we know:

The pursuit began in Contra Costa County on westbound Highway 24 through the Caldecott Tunnel before it ended up in Oakland on Highway 13.

The pursuit went through multiple counties as the Lexus was seen driving erratically. At one point, police threw spike strips at the car to try and disable it, but they missed.

The vehicle was seen driving the wrong way into oncoming traffic to avoid a police car.

CHP said hours later, a male suspect fled from the vehicle on foot and entered an apartment complex at the 8000 block of Calvert Circle in San Ramon. CHP said a female passenger in the vehicle was earlier detained.

CHP said this is an ongoing situation and that which agency assumes the lead in the investigation depends on when the incident is resolved.

"Units are still working on the suspect that fled into the apartment complex," CHP said in a late Friday night update.

In an update, CHP said the vehicle was wanted in connection with a reported theft by the Oakley Police Department. No further details of the theft were immediately available.
