San Francisco police say the driver of a tractor trailer involved in a fatal hit-and-run is in custody and is cooperating with detectives.

Oscar Matus, 65, of Lathrop was arrested was arrested by San Francisco police on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crash near 5th and Market streets early Thursday morning.

The coroner identified the victim struck in the Tenderloin hit-and-run as Michael Evans, 54.  He died at the hospital.

The collision happened at 5:42 a.m., police said.

A few hours later, police located and surrounded the big rig belonging to Terraba Trucking of Stockton at Broadway and Front Street.

This is the 12th pedestrian to be hit and killed in San Francisco this year.

City transportation officials say the Tenderloin is part of what they call the "injury network" meaning it's an area that sees a lot of accidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists.

"Our goal is to re-engineer all the streets in the high-injury network. Just last month we redesigned Taylor Street. We're trying to slow those speeds down and make it safer for people to walk around," said Tom Maguire, acting director of San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.

Police said they are collecting surveillance video and talking with witnesses to learn more about this morning's crash. Anyone with information is asked to call the police.
