A driver was seriously injured after fleeing from a Marin County sheriff's deputy during a traffic stop on northbound U.S. Highway 101 at state Highway 37, according to the Marin County Sheriff's Office.

The fleeing suspect was driving erratically and crashed while trying to evade deputies, the sheriff's office said on Twitter. The driver was seriously injured in the crash.

The California Highway Patrol reported a vehicle overturned on Highway 101 near Highway 37 around 12:06 p.m. All lanes of the highway remained open but the transition to state Highway 37 was closed, according to
the CHP.

The transition to the Highway 37 reopened at 1:03 p.m., the CHP said.

According to a preliminary CHP investigation, 29-year-old Angelo Matthews of Los Angeles was driving a rented 2016 Chrysler Town & Country minivan. A Marin County Sheriff's Deputy stopped the vehicle. When the deputy approached the minivan, Matthews allegedly accelerated in his vehicle away from the scene.

The pursuit began on US 101, but the deputy lost sight of the vehicle. He did notice multiple vehicles that were damaged from collisions near the shoulder. The parties of those vehicles had pointed the deputy in the direction of a wooded area. That's where the minivan was found down an embankment.

Police say a collision caused Matthews to lose control on the roadway. He traveled off the roadway and collided with a tree.
