Driver who died after high-speed pursuit ID'd

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KTVU) - A man who died in a crash in San Jose following a high-speed pursuit with the California Highway Patrol early Wednesday morning was identified as 21-year-old Daniel Avalos, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office.

The crash occurred around 4 a.m. on the Winchester Boulevard off-ramp from Interstate Highway 280, CHP officials said.

Shortly before 3:30 a.m., officers got involved in a high-speed pursuit with a white Honda Accord that was fleeing the Gilroy area, according to the CHP.

The driver, later identified as Avalos, fled from officers and drove at speeds in excess of 100 mph while swerving through traffic, CHP officials said.

Avalos led officers onto Highway 280, where the driver tried to exit at Winchester Boulevard, lost control of the vehicle and crashed, according to the CHP.

The vehicle went airborne and rolled at least once before coming to a stop just off the off-ramp, CHP officials said.

Avalos was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A passenger in the Accord was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, according to the CHP.

Officers said the vehicle involved in the pursuit was reported stolen out of Los Banos.

One officer suffered minor injuries when a patrol vehicle involved in the pursuit crashed into a road sign, according to the CHP.
