Early morning crash in Oakland kills one
OAKLAND, Calif. (BCN) - One person died early this morning during a vehicle crash along Interstate Highway 880 in Oakland, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Around 2:30 a.m., officers received reports of multiple collisions in the highway's southbound lanes near downtown Oakland.
Callers also said the collisions may have been a result of standing water in the roadway caused by rain.
Because of one of the collisions, a red 2004 Hyundai had become disabled and the driver pulled over the right side of the southbound shoulder.
Moments later, the driver of a 2009 Range Rover lost control and crashed into the Hyundai, according to the CHP.
The impact caused the driver to be ejected off the shoulder and into a parking area below.
The male victim was pronounced dead at the scene, CHP officials said.
Investigators believe the driver of the Hyundai was outside of their car when the Range Rover struck the Hyundai.
Officers were able to speak with the driver of the Range Rover and do not believe they were under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash, according to CHP officials.
