Flight from SFO to London diverted after 25 fall ill
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KTVU) - A flight from SFO to London was diverted to Canada Monday night after about 25 crew members fell ill.
British airways flight 286 left the Bay Area just after 7:00PM Monday night but a few hours into its flight the plane was diverted to Vancouver.
A flight track map on Flightaware.com shows the plan making a shark turn just after crossing into Canadian airspace.
British Airways issued a statement that read:
“We are sorry for the delay to our customers' flight but the safety and well being of our customers and crew is always our top priority. The flight from San Francisco diverted to Vancouver after members of the cabin crew became unwell. The cabin crew were checked as a precaution at local hospitals before being discharged.
Our ground team at Vancouver has arranged hotel accommodation for the customers and will book them on alternative flights as soon as possible.”
Officials at Vancouver Airport tweeted that the cause of the illness was smoke inhalation.
Multiple Candaian news reports indicate that some passengers were also sickened and that 25 people in total were taken to local hospitals.
It's not clear if any of them were seriously hurt.
Canadian officials say that the remaining passengers will be rebooked on other flights later Tuesday Morning.
