Hit-and-run drivers who struck machete-wielding man sought

Oakland police are looking for two hit-and-run drivers who appear to have intentionally hit a man holding a machete on the road early Monday morning.

OPD officers responded to the 3700 block of International Boulevard on a report of a person in the roadway armed with a machete.

When officers arrived at the scene, the man was still armed with the machete. Officers directed him to put it down. He was cooperative, and police safely detained him.

Witnesses at the scene advised police that the man had been in the roadway throwing bottles and attempting to break out the windows of parked cars. The man, a 25-year-old Oakland resident, was also hitting the windows of cars driving by with the machete.

Witnesses told the officers that it appeared that one driver had intentionally hit the man and that he was struck a second time by a car driving through the area.

Someone took video of the incident from a balcony on International Boulevard. The man can be seen hitting a red car with the machete. The red car then circles back and hits the man twice.

A white car is then seen slamming into the man. Both drivers failed to stop.

Officers said he suffered only minor injuries. He was arrested and placed on a psychiatric hold.

Investigators are looking for a newer red or maroon 4-door Hyundai and a newer white 4-door Toyota Camry or similar model.

Oakland Police investigators from the Felony Assault Unit are investigating this incident as assaults with deadly weapons. They are looking for the drivers of the two vehicles involved.

Crime Stoppers of Oakland is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for any information leading to an arrest in this case.

Anyone with information about the vehicles or drivers is asked to contact the Felony Assault Unit at (510) 238-3426.
