It's National Compliment Day. This study shows the power of a compliment

January 24 is National Compliment Day-- but how often to give or receive them? You might want to make an effort. According to a study from Harvard Business School, generous compliments lead to success

The researchers found that being reminded of past successes (by friends, family, and colleagues) made people perform at their absolute best. People who received praise were:

  • More resilient to stress
  • More resistant to disease and burnout
  • Better at creative problem solving and performance under pressure
  • And formed stronger long-term relationships with their employer

The study authors say compliments offer recipients “a different narrative about themselves by helping them see the impact they are capable of making on others.”

So don’t hold back on praise! “These results suggest that there is considerable lost potential in keeping silent about how others affect us when they are at their best.”
