OAKLAND (KTVU) -- Bay Area media outlets will place a spotlight on the issue of homelessness on Wednesday, Dec. 7 when KTVU and other local news media will broadcast or print stories about the issue and its challenges.
KTVU/FOX 2 and over 80 other media outlets participated last June by offering a full day and/or week of coverage about homelessness in the Bay Area and what the community can do to solve it.
The coverage in June produced over 350 articles and broadcasts and posts about homelessness in the Bay Area and inspired similar efforts in other cities, including Seattle, Los Angeles and San Diego.
Since June 29, the project has produced a voter guide to candidates thoughts on how to solve homelessness as well as several additional stories about the public’s reaction to the news coverage. After the SF Homeless Project’s JUNE 29 day of mass coverage, dozens of measures to increase funding and change public policies were passed in cities around California.
Nonprofit organizations that serve homeless people reported a rise in donations, and advocates said the day of coverage transformed and improved the nuance of policy discussions around housing and homelessness issues.
The Dec. 7 day of coverage will focus on what has -- and has not -- been done since June 29 to help the tens of thousands of people living on the streets of Northern California. Some media organizations will once again devote the week to covering the issues around homelessness.
KTVU's coverage on Wednesday will include an update from reporter Monte Francis about homeless students on Treasure Island and how they are doing in class as well as a story by reporter Debora Villalon on how a North Bay community is using federal funds to fight homelessness.
