Rescue workers in Indianapolis said a man died after he ran onto an icy pond to try and save his dog.

It happened outside an apartment complex where witnesses said the man was seen on an iced over pond, trying to rescue his dog which had run off onto the water. The man then fell through the ice.

Divers from the Indianapolis Fire Department responded and carried out an "aggressive rescue," according to fire officials.

They eventually located the victim in the water. He was in critical condition and transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The dog was one of two that the victim owned and was seen in a photo released by the Indianapolis Fire Department.

The dog managed to get out of the water on its own and is doing okay, according to fire officials.

"...tragically the man did not survive," the fire department wrote in a Facebook post, offering up prayers to the victim's family.
